German container glass manufacturers are hit hard by recession
2009 was a rough year for the German economy. So it is no surprise that the manufacturers of container glass were reporting falling sales figures. Sales shrunk by 7.3%.
The outlook for this year is brighter. We've already seen the worst of it, a trade group says. In 2009, German container glass manufacturers were producing 3.8 million metric tons. 64% were bottles (2.4 million metric tons), and 28% were cans. “The financial crisis also impacted the container glass industry and our ability to post growth in 2009. However, in comparison with other glass industries, we weren't hit that hard,” said Johann Overath, chief executive officer of the Bundesverband Glasindustrie e.V., a trade group. (bmg)
